Rough Couple of Days in the Music World

It's been a rough couple of days for music lovers.... Last week we lost MCA (Adam Yauch). Yesterday we lost a DC Go-Go Legend Chuck Brown. Today we loose a GIANT of Disco Donna Summer. Part of DJing is being a student of music. I realized very early in my DJ career that I wanted to know music, and by knowing music that will help me become a better more creative DJ. While keeping up with the newest tracks, I would spend hours listening to classic albums, reading commentary and biographies of artists, exploring new (to me) sounds from around the world, and talking with other DJs to get their perspective. I would listen to the old Beastie Boy Albums and all the early Def Jam stuff. I would track down early GO-GO and Soul Searches tracks. And I would try to identify all the classic disco and soul tracks I would hear DJs play in their Old Skool mixes. Knowing music's past is to know its future. peace
